It was a goalie duel and a classic battle and intensity that you would expect in a San Jose - Detroit game. But a Logan Couture shootout goal, and Antti Niemi's shutout performance put the Sharks in the win column over the Red Wings, 1-0. San Jose (8-0-1) held Detroit (6-3-1) to just five shots on goal halfway through the game, nonetheless, the Wings' onslaught was expected, and Niemi was up to the task. His 24 save performance along with the three saves in the shootout was good for his 24th career shutout. Jimmy Howard also gets credit for a shutout with a solid 27 save effort.
Among many, the game was a majority of a "snoozefest" according to many on Twitter. That changed when the intensity went into playoff mode against these two rivals. Detroit got a questionable power play under five minutes left but the Sharks killed off that advantage. Detroit's Brendan Smith hit the outside of the goal post with 4:57 remaining in regulation. Niemi made an outstanding save on Daniel Alfredsson's shot from the bottom of the right circle 7:31 into the second period. After a back and forth overtime, the game was ultimately decided in a shootout. Howard was able to stop Patrick Marleau, however, Logan Couture did go glove side to put the only puck in the net in this game. Antti Niemi was able to stop Pavel Datsyuk, Daniel Alfredsson and made an unreal save off Todd Bertuzzi that won the game for San Jose.
